Sentimental Witches - Day 29 - The Stars Above Like Grains Of Sand

from Week 5 by The Diary Of Mars

about

The Stars Above Like Grains Of Sand
for Solo Cello, Tape, & Percussion Septet
Dedicated to the Muse Kelliope, Keziah Mason, & Stanislaw Lem
Composed by Sentimental Witches
Performed by Eugene Debs Solarkestra Exoplanetary

The Occultriad known collectively and individually as Sentimental Witches crafted this score from the pairing of early Martian probe telemetry and infrasonic field recordings made at the site of Keziah Mason's old home in Massachusetts. They then built a new Martian instrument from scraps of ABS pipe, left over from the water filtration system they helped the Martian Team Engineers install. This instrument, the Trivichord, requires three people to play. It is a collective instrument, unplayable by an individual, symbolic of life on Mars, where there is no such thing as an individual, only families and the collaborative defined as society. (To suggest that there are individuals but no society is reductionist, and makes no more sense than saying There are no individuals, only microbiota and families of microbiota and no body can do anything except through microbiota and microbiota look to themselves first.)

Sentimental Witches then sent the score and the married field recordings to Earth, where the lead cellist, Kelliope, and the percussionists of the Eugene Debs Solarkestra Exoplanetary performed their parts. This recording was sent back to Mars. A few nights later, Sentimental Witches performed The Stars Above Like Grains Of Sand on the Trivichord accompanied by the married field recordings and the EDSE recording for the delighted Mars Colonists and (delayed by transit) a joyous NASA and Earth.
We hope you enjoy this live recording of that performance.
