about

In this volume of the diary of Mars, we find an account of mankind's exploration of the atmosphere of Mars in various places with specific devices on the Martian settlement. Discoveries soon followed the first explorations and some of them were, to say the least, surprising. A few of them were extensions of some of the things we had learned while still on Earth. But the possibility of probing the atmosphere of the red planet closely and with higher resolution has uncovered new information which was not quite what we had expected.

The electromagnetic waves reflect in the ionosphere in ways which differ from the way they do on Earth. Their reflection seems to be affected by something within the ionosphere which is not easily identifiable. So far, we could only measure its effects but we were not able to find out what it is that causes this behaviour. Reflections of the electromagnetic waves were abruptly interrupted for no apparent reason and then resumed after some time. Why this happened is still unknown. It worries the staff on land because it may have consequences for communications which can't be fully forseen.

There's a growing feeling among the personnel on land that something is not quite right. A growing sense of unease. We have reached Mars and we have settled on it, but we feel that, as silly as this may sound, we're not welcome here. It sounds silly because, as far as we know, no other civilization is or was here, but the time intervals in which reflections were interrupted have very specific durations which make us suspicious on the fact that they are random interruptions.

Are we alone here? Or is Mars just a very different planet from what we thought by exploring it from Earth? We're worried by these questions and we try to stay emotionally balanced in the midst of the uncertainties which seem to flourish often. Noone on Earth has been able to find a suitable explanation for these things that we have found. We hope they can help us in this matter soon.
